The Noblesville Parks Department is giving youngsters a chance to have a little fun and learn a lot after the sun goes down.
Assistant recreation director Cindy Knapp heads up the department's new "Who's Out After Dark" camp geared toward older kids looking for more advanced activities in their summer camp experience.
"We're doing all kinds of exploring," Knapp said. "It's something that interests the older kids."
It's an opportunity to participate in something fun, new and different, Knapp added. Earlier in the week campers hiked to the White River learning how to make safe camp fires and made boats that had to float and carry pennies at the same time. On Wednesday two groups of campers were given compasses, numbered envelopes and the task of hiding those envelopes throughout the park while maintaining a record of paces between envelopes and the direction traveled. Once done, the groups exchanged instructions and set off to find the other team's string of envelopes. The campers rewarded themselves by making, and enjoying, s'mores.
"It's more to this than just a camp," Knapp said. "It's a chance for them to get comfortable with new friends and the night."
The camp concludes Friday with an anticipated night hike using reflective tape to guide them through the dark.
"I'd like to see this continued," Knapp said of the camp. "We've got great counselors. I think they're the best. Everyone's having fun."
